Digital Film Design

Visualisations, 3D animations and visual effects (VFX) are an integral part of today’s film, television, gaming and advertising industries. Dragons, monsters and epic battle scenes in films, cars, washing detergent packaging and food products...when it comes to TV and printed advertising, it almost all comes from a computer. Only the backgrounds are sometimes still real. With its cinematic trailers for new games, the gaming industry is also a constant source of digital film design work. Animation and VFX continue to conquer new industries. The areas of virtual reality, augmented reality and 360 ° film are now also added. Accordingly, the need for well-trained specialists is very high - and the trend is rising!

Core skills

The four core competencies that students acquire during their studies are design, computer graphics, film design and projects.

The necessary theoretical knowledge is taught in numerous lectures, such as visualization, typography or drawing and consolidated through regular practical exercises.

An important USP of the Digital Film Design (BA) is that students have lectures in 3D modelling and animation every semester. We start with Autodesk Maya. We then move on to Houdini as our second 3D software.

Further focus points of this degree programme are: design, planning and implementation of visual effects and the relevant compositing (after effects and nuke). These skills are deepened through numerous exercises in which the students shoot real film material themselves and combine it with digital elements.

In many individual and group projects, students work on large and small projects.
